The JRNY So Far

The JRNY has begun! Everyone has been hard at work since our Finalist Showcase so here’s a little look into the development that’s happened since then.

THE MUSIC

Moving along the timeline, we’ve started and completed pre–production and have currently moved onto tracking. Coming up next week, we’ll begin drum tracking.

Pre–Production (Jam Space)

THE EXPERIENCE

Once Five Oceans took home the grand prize, we had our first official meeting on March 2nd where we discussed their prizing timeline, consulted and celebrated with food and drink at Beertown Public House with Anderson Craft Ales!

The oceans pulled out their thinking caps for this one. In early April we visited Mystery Escape Rooms who contributed an escape game to our winners. After an hour of hunting and searching, they almost made it out before their time was up!

Escape Game (Mystery Escape Rooms)

Our Marketing and Creative Development partners at adHOME Creative began Five Ocean’s brand development late last week after the Brocean’s met with their team at home base. Let’s just say the band’s branding is great hands and they couldn’t agree more.
Down the road, we’ll meet again with adHOME for the band’s brand reveal meeting.. Stay tuned for that!

Head to head.. Five Oceans VS Prevail Media Group. Who will come up on top? Well, sorry Brocean’s but our LQ game is a little stronger than yours. We had the opportunity to battle it out at Laser Quest in downtown London against our hard working contest winners and let’s just say we all had a blast!

What’s up Next?

Throughout April we will continue tracking and be progressing with the band’s branding development. They also have their visit to Junction Climbing Centre and Anderson Craft Ales later this week!

Stay tuned for the where their JRNY is onto next!

Meet The Finalists

After much deliberation we narrowed it down to these incredible finalists. We hope to share a little of what we came to learn about these impeccable people and that you take some time to listen and enjoy their music as much as we do!

In alphabetical order..

Ben Heffernan
16486831_10158157180875471_4385403448332316070_o

BIOGRAPHY
“Ben Heffernan is a 16 year old singer-songwriter based out of London, Ontario. He released his first EP, entitled “Different Wars”, in March 2017. Heffernan considers John Mayer, Ed Sheeran, and U2 his main influences. His live performances have drawn further comparisons to Ed Sheeran due to his use of a loop station, which allows him to create additional layers of instrumentation and backing vocals on the spot. In April 2016, Ben won a Jack Richardson London Music Award in the Youth category, which won him a full development package. The future appears to be bright for this young singer-songwriter, who is determined to continue to build his name and create a career for himself in the music industry.”

FUN FACTS
– He started his “music career” with a paint brush microphone and a ukulele singing Elvis at the age of one.
– He was in a Beatles cover band called “The Stink Beatles” between age 9 and 13.
– In early 2015, a casting company left a comment on his YouTube cover of U2’s Song for Someone saying that his version of the song had been chosen to be in U2’s music video for the song. He called the number too late that day and missed the opportunity.
– He wrote his first song at the age of 7 about McDonald’s Happy Meals.
– When he decided to go solo in 2014, he realized that the only drawback was that the sound he could produce on his own was weak in comparison to a band, so he bought a loop pedal to fill in the gaps.

Bodhi Jar

BIOGRAPHY
“We tread not in the footsteps of the masters We seek what they sought.
In a time where the industry is saturated with more product than music, four individuals came together from a place long forgotten. A place where music is more than a paycheck, more than a stepping stone but a true expression of the soul.
Bodhi Jar is not the product but the vessel. In 2013, four separate energies from four distinct pasts converged to carve their own path through the universe. Andrew Bragg, Drew Merrifield, Anthony Borek and Dakota Noreiga became the four pillars to this Progressive Rock sound.
When your only ambition is creation you delve into a place of purity. A place where inspiration resides and imagination reigns.”

FUN FACTS
– If it wasnt for Subway, they wouldn’t be a band.
– They Tune to 432 rather than the standard A440.
– 50% of the band is Vegetarian/Vegan.
– They’ve been known to turn an On Route parking lot into a B&B.

Cameron Jericho
16402661_10158157179300471_6627613257296515069_o

BIOGRAPHY
“One of the best feelings in the world is being absolutely and utterly lost in a moment of music. An intimate experience between artist and listener. This can happen in the line at Starbucks, on the radio while you drive to work, or when listening to your favourite playlist before you fall asleep. Cameron Jericho’s vivid imagery, honest storytelling, and vocal sensibilities bring you these moments with unique and interesting songs.

Pulling from both current and legendary influences, Jericho creates a new and exclusive sound that can only fall under the umbrella of “Folk”, while still confidently flirting with the best parts of pop music. Someone who can engage with the gritty side of life, he also remembers to come up for air- which leads to emotionally dynamic music. These songs were born to live in your all-time top ten lists.

Jericho has an impressive repertoire of work, including having a co-written song placed in an award-winning short film, playing live on CBC radio, and headlining the grand opening of “The Rosewood” venue in London. Years of performance in almost every size of venue has given Jericho a polished and experienced stage presence, apparent from the very first song of every performance.”

FUN FACTS
– He loves folding things (origami)
– His life revolves around cheeseburgers (and music)
– His favourite thing to do is write songs
– He loves Avril Lavigne
– He really enjoys booking shows

He started playing guitar at a young age at the insistence of his father and ended up loving it enough to try and make a career out of music. He is currently involved in a few projects, one being the local London band Kid Royal as the main songwriter and singer of the group. He is currently attending Fanshawe college and is enrolled in the MIA (Music Industry arts) program.”

FUN FACTS

Five Oceans
16486827_10158157180520471_152147327183724547_o

BIOGRAPHY
“Five Oceans first wows an audience with the powerful vocals of lead singer Warren Hargraves. Hargraves’ voice features vintage-meets-modern charm, influenced as much by old-school acts like The Allman Brothers and The Eagles as it is by currentday
troubadours like Chris Stapleton and Anderson East. When first paired with the dynamic work of guitarist Josh Try in the summer of 2014, the high school friends knew they had captured something special. Try went to work finding a rhythm section capable of taking the pair to new heights, eventually settling on two of the finest musicians he knew: bassist Pat Dal Cin and drummer Mark Swan. Hargraves also recruited his uncle, accomplished saxophonist Creg Johnston, to round out the lineup. Since then, Five Oceans have been hard at work generating interest on the local scene, including spotlight appearances on CHRW, Reaney’s Pick and the London Free Press, and sharing the stage with a wide range of acts including Arkells, The Darcys, Torero, and Genevieve Fisher. After the release of their debut EP, “From What You’ve Heard”, in fall 2015, the boys continued to develop their own brand of rootsy, souful, southern rock with the release of their first single, “I’m Gone” (produced with Studio B’s Randy Rektor) in May 2016. A wild summer followed, seeing Five Oceans play shows to captive audiences across Southwestern Ontario,
including multiple sets in Toronto and Hamilton. With colder weather, the band has settled in to record a new EP, produced by Alastair Sims, with an expected release date of Spring 2017. The band is always looking for new venues and audiences to
share their music with, and are poised to make 2017 a year to remember!”

FUN FACTS
– Drummer Mark Swan once placed second in a national drum solo contest – this means he is the second best drummer in all of Canada.
– The band went through numerous name changes before settling on Five Oceans, including “Barbecue” and “Lamp”.
– Bassist Pat Dal Cin hails from Sault Ste. Marie, ON, and has a very distinct (though subtle) accent as a result. This makes him the most exotic member of Five Oceans.
– Singer Warren Hargraves and guitarist Josh Try went to high school together, though they were more “acquaintances” than anything. Now, they refer to themselves as “business partners”, but never “friends”.
– The band opened for the Arkells at Western University in September of 2016.

Mirage
16487059_10158157179355471_6166358738216121967_o

BIOGRAPHY
“Mirage is a group of three humans inspired by fuzzy distorted guitar, loud bass scales, heavy drum fills and intense vocals. Dubbed by listeners as a mix of 90’s grunge, alt rock and punk, Mirage self describes as underground rock (rumbling so super deep below the earth’s surface you could basically call it seaweed level). The band was created 4632 hours into 2013 by Ariel & Leeona, who are sisters that write music to express themselves and dive out of reality. Intensified by Jordan, smashing in with dynamic beats, the trio is hugely inspired by all kinds of music…and sounds…and art…and life. They love to play live and loud, and though they have played around a bunch of places in and around London, a few in the the GTA, Ottawa and Montreal, travelling and playing even further and louder is something they would love to do! Mirage is working on releasing their first ever LP with, of course…(you guessed it)…13 tracks.”

FUN FACTS
– They love tardigrades + outer space + sea creatures + the unknown.
– Their band’s original name was cat inspired (what it was will remain a secret).
– They dream of one day travelling to Japan. All for the sushi…errr…They mean, to play live there!
– They have hundreds of originals written, because making songs is one thing they can never have too much of.
– Mirage contains the number 13 because they started the band on July 13, 2013. And though they ended up having two car accidents on a 13th, they’ve also had multiple awesome shows!

“Nate Bain and Trish Sawhney are the two components that fuse together to create what is known as Nate & Trish or Whatever. The two met in 2012 while studying Music at the University of Western in London, Ontario, Canada. They officially formed the pop/rock duo in 2013. Line In The Sand was officially released in October 2015. Nate & Trish are currently working on material for their first LP, which is set to be released in late 2017 or early 2018.
Nate & Trish or Whatever draw influence from a wide variety of musical styles ranging from folk, to jazz, rock, to hip-hop, as well as classical. Nate & Trish want to provide you with music that you can enjoy while sitting on the couch, dancing at party, or slaying dragons on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. Nate & Trish or Whatever are a musical two ready to serenade you!”

FUN FACTS
– The first show Nate & Trish played together was actually before they really even knew each other during Frosh Week and was in front of 7000 people.
– Their EP was recorded by Bob Doidge, the same man who has recorded artists like U2, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Gordon Lightfoot and Raffi.
– Trish fully fell down on stage at their EP release and took the whole keyboard with her in front of 200 people, yet only 3 people actually saw it happen.

Taken from their location of the connection between the Canadian National and Canadian Pacific railway networks, Junction wanted their name to not only reflect the importance of our railways to London’s heritage but also embody the idea of a community coming together.

Before Junction, London was the largest city in Ontario without a climbing gym. In 2014, After two long years of searching, they didn’t just find a great place, they found the perfect one. (1030 Elias Street to be exact!) Working together with Europe’s largest climbing wall designer, they’ve created a stunning terrain that reaches over 3 stories high. They’re proud to say they have one of the largest climbing arches in the country!

As Owner John Kudelka shared with us “Junction is proud to be part of the resurgence of the Old East Village, which is rapidly becoming one of London’s most desired neighbourhoods. We came 2nd in the Venture New Business Competition in 2014, and we will be hosting the Ontario Youth Provincial Climbing Championships in 2017!

Think climbing is just for the thrill seekers? Think again! Climbing is accessible to anyone and all are welcome! Junction has plenty of opportunities for you to come on out and give climbing a try! See for yourself.

Partner Feature – London Music Hall

First established in 1996 the London Music Hall wasn’t always the place we’ve come to know and love so much today. As the former location of the first Zellers in Canada, Mike Manuel purchased the 40,000-square-foot storefront on Dundas St. in 1994. “It was empty when I bought it, but it was a good deal.” He first turned the space into a market called ‘The Downtown Trade Centre,’ when it didn’t go as well as he expected he decided to return to what was his first London business and open Cosmo City. CC was a laser tag/arcade entertainment complex that offered video games, birthday party rooms and of course laser tag! It was a hit! However, With the growth of home game consoles, Cosmo City closed in 2005. Manuel said, “It was a very good run.

You know the story doesn’t end here!
Rum Runners came to life with the decline of Cosmo City as it was only being used for parties and events at the time. The venue quickly took off and with that came the decision to open the doors of the London Music Hall in 2006. They intended to bring great live music to the community and with winning Best Venue at the Jack Richardson Music Awards & Nominated for Best Venue at the Canadian Music and Broadcasting Awards we say they sure brought it! Lauren Denault, Assistant at the LMH shared with us “With the help of the community and city of London we were able to expand and create the ultimate live entertainment experience.

The London Music Hall has become a staple to our community bringing us the likes of DeadMau5, Snoop Dogg, The Trews, Alexisonfire, Avicii, Apocalyptica, J. Cole, Afrojack, Skrillex, A Day To Remember, NOFX and so many more, always reaching every end of the spectrum so every music lover locally and beyond has something to enjoy.

Even some of our favorite local festivals & events are hosted by.. You guessed it!

Partner Feature – Ontario Institute of Audio Recording Technology (OIART)

Established in 1983 by engineer and producer Paul Steenhuis, OIART is the largest full-time faculty of any audio school in Canada. With its unique educational model that has been in development for over three decades, the program provides training to audio engineers in music production, recording arts, audio engineering, sound recording and other related felids. They provide a 5:1 student to teacher ratio which gives their students full-time access to their instructors, on a first name basis. Even lab times are supervised so there is consistently someone close by to guide you through the learning process. In addition, they also supplement the program with a guest faculty which provides real-world perspectives to its students.

OIART has been proudly London based for the last 34 years, supporting the local music scene from the JRLMA’s, Sunfest, to the current London Music Committee. Dean Nelson Engineer, Producer, and Educator at OIART shared with us “From recording a Beatle to the Hip and Drake, broadcasting the Olympics & Stanley Cup, and audio work on Grammy, Juno, Oscar, Gemini, and Emmy award-winning projects, OIART graduates are our proudest achievement.

They’ve not only successfully helped grads find jobs in the prime areas of music production, live audio and audio for visual media such as film, television, and gaming but have achieved a completion rate that is significantly higher than the provincial average attracting students from around the world.

Partner Feature – Music Industry Arts (MIA)

In 1975 Fanshawe College‘s “Creative Electronics” program was born. Originally created by Tom Lodge, an English author, and radio broadcaster; the program began to evolve into ‘Music Industry Arts‘, (MIA) a training program for recording engineers and record producers.
The program was re-energized by legendary Canadian producer, Jack Richardson. As a former faculty member, he inspired students to be knowledgeable and ahead of emerging trends and technologies in the music industry. Richardson had mentored and trained many of the industry’s leaders across North America and is perhaps best known for producing the biggest hit records from The Guess Who from 1969 to 1975 and The Juno Award for “Producer of the Year” that has been named in Richardson’s honor since 2002.

Graduates of this program have led the industry by leaps and bounds with Grammys, Emmys, Junos and many other great achievements. Although it was originally known as an engineering and producing school, it has since expanded into artist development which as Dan Brodbeck says “Has brought new room energy to the city.” He also made mention that as he was sharing with us the Standstills, (graduates from 2009) were performing at Bud Gardens with Our Lady Peace and I Mother Earth.

In fact, most of our engineers at Prevail Music Studios are graduates from the Music Industry Arts Program. It seems as though no matter how much time has passed, MIA will always be there to support its artists. Thank you for the support on Start Your JRNY and for continuing to develop some of the many talented artists and engineers that hail from our great city.

If you haven’t already, we think you should check out: Jack Richardson London Music Awards, Jack Richardson London Music Awards Hall of Fame, & Share the Land.

MIA gave me a sense of family and teamwork. It helped me develop the tools that I needed to become independent and get ready to work as well as express my creativity and discover new paths for my life.
